Frank G. Shellock, Ph.D., FACC, FACSM

Frank G. Shellock, Ph.D. is a physiologist with more than 25 years of experience conducting laboratory and clinical investigations in the field of magnetic resonance imaging. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Radiology and Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, the Director of MRI Studies at the Biomimetic Microelectronic Systems, National Science Foundation - Engineering Research Center, and the Founder of the Institute for Magnetic Resonance Safety, Education, and Research (www.IMRSER.org). He holds two U.S. patents in the field of MRI safety. As a commitment to the field of MRI safety, bioeffects, and patient management, he created and maintains the internationally popular web site, www.MRIsafety.com. This web site currently has over 100,000 registered users.

Dr. Shellock has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications in the peer-reviewed literature. He co-authored the MRI safety section of the Cardiovascular MR Self-Assessment Program (CMR-SAP) for the American College of Cardiology and three of his medical textbooks - Reference Manual for Magnetic Resonance Safety, Implants and Devices; Magnetic Resonance Procedures: Health Effects and Safety; and Kinematic MRI of the Joints: Functional Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Clinical Applications - are best sellers.

Dr. Shellock is a member of the Sub-Committee on MRI safety issues for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International. Additionally, he serves in advisory roles to government, industry, and other policy-making organizations and is currently a Consultant to the Circulatory Systems Devices Panel for the Food and Drug Administration.

He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and a Reviewing Editor for numerous medical and scientific journals including Radiology, Investigative Radiology, Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the American Journal of Roentgenology, the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Memberships in professional societies include the American College of Radiology, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the Radiological Society of North America, the California Radiological Society, the Hawaii Radiological Society, the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and the American Heart Association. He is also a member and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Sportsmedicine. In 2004, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine recognized the significant contributions Dr. Shellock has made to the scientific and educational mission of the ISMRM by designating him a Fellow of the Society. The American College of Radiology awarded him a Distinguished Committee Service Award for years of dedicated service to the Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards Committee – Body MRI.

In 1994, the Crues-Kressel Award was given to Dr. Shellock for his outstanding contributions to the education of MRI Technologists. In 2003, the Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT) further recognized him by presenting the Honorary Member Award to him for his extraordinary achievement and exceptional level of service and support of the SMRT.

Dr. Shellock is a recipient of a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and has received numerous grants from governmental agencies and private organizations. He is currently participating in research to define safety for cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and neuromodulation systems.

He lectures both nationally and internationally and has provided plenary lectures to numerous organizations including the Radiological Society of North America, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American College of Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Oklahoma Heart Institute, the Head and Neck Radiology Society, the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (Food and Drug Administration), the Magnetic Resonance Managers Society, the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Neuroimaging, the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, the Heart Rhythm Society, the Finnish Radiological Society, the International Congress of Radiology, the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology, the British Chapter of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists.

His company, Magnetic Resonance Safety Testing Services, specializes in the assessment of MRI safety for implants and devices as well as the evaluation of electromagnetic field-related bioeffects and the development of new clinical MR imaging applications for low-field (0.2-Tesla), high-field, and very-high-field strength MR systems (www.MagneticResonanceSafetyTesting.com).
